"They have come forward to support our Paralympics movement and these baby steps can actually result in a giant leap. Like they say a good beginning is half the battle won and this is a pious beginning. I really want more sponsors to come forward and I plead from this platform that it is high time that everybody believes in us because we have already proved our worth that we as para-athletes and para-sportspersons can do wonders to put India's identity as a sporting nation on the global map", said Rio Paralympics Silver medalist Deepa Malik to India Today. Deepa was felicitated at the event along with Gold medalist Devendra Jhajharia.

The USA wrestling team won't be able to compete in the Freestyle World Cup which will be held in Iran in February as visas were denied to its members, media reports said. A spokesman from the Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry said a special committee reviewed the case on Friday and "eventually the visit by the USA freestyle wrestling team was opposed", Tasnim News Agency reported. The visa denial comes after Iran announced it would take "reciprocal measures" toward US citizens following President Donald Trump's travel ban to nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries, CNN reported. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was "obliged inevitably to oppose the US wrestling team's travel to Iran" in the wake of Trump's policies, the spokesman said. The US wrestling team has been in Iran for tournaments 15 times since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and the sport's governing body said on January 30 that it planned to send a delegation to the Freestyle World Cup on February 16-17 in Kermanshah, Iran. The US wrestling team said on Friday it had not been officially notified that its wrestlers would be denied entry into Iran.

Only Serbia, champions in 2010 and facing Russia at home in Nis, had the services of a top ten player in Novak Djokovic and they took a 2-0 lead. Raucous home support for holders Argentina did not make up for the absence of Juan Martin del Potro and Federico Delbonis on Friday as they fell 2-0 behind to Italy in the first round of the Davis Cup. Croatia, runners-up last year, were without their top man Marin Cilic but managed to end the opening singles level 1-1 with a Spanish team lacking Rafa Nadal after Franko Skugor upset Pablo Carreno Busta over five sets.

India defeated England by 75 runs in the third and final ODI to clinch the three-match ODI series 2-1 after Yuzvendra Chahal bagged 6/25, denting England in their chase of 203. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's maiden six-wicket haul turned things around for India as the hosts beat England by 75 runs in the third and final Twenty20 International to clinch the series 2-1 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Wednesday. Chasing a mammoth 203, England were on track till the 13th over scoring 119/2, before Chahal's magical spell (6/25) put the visitors on the back foot as they surrendered meekly to lose their last eight wickets for just eight runs and end on 127. Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni added 57 quick runs as India posted a daunting 202/6 against England. While City's victory moved them level on 46 points with fourth-placed Liverpool and kept leaders Chelsea just about in their sights, United's slip-up left them sixth. Manchester City turned on the style to dismantle West Ham United 4-0 and revive their fading Premier League title aspirations as Manchester United's hopes suffered a potentially fatal blow with a goalless home draw against struggling Hull City on Wednesday. City produced a scintillating first-half display, scoring three times before the break through Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and new boy Gabriel Jesus, before Yaya Toure's penalty capped a one-sided romp at the London Stadium.

The series starts on Feb. 17 in Melbourne before the second game in Geelong on Feb. 19 and concludes in Adelaide on Feb. 22. The Supreme Court is likely to take up the matter at 2pm today.

Chelsea have not lost a league game at Anfield since 2012, although they will probably feel a little short-changed after failing to capitalise on Liverpool's lack of form. Diego Costa's missed second-half penalty cost Premier League leaders Chelsea a victory at Liverpool on Tuesday but a 1-1 draw did little damage to their title prospects as closest rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur dropped points.

Flashback to 23 March 2016: It's a virtual do-or-die match for India as they face Bangladesh in the World T20 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. Bangladesh are chasing a mediocre 147. Opener Tamim Iqbal flicks the first ball of the innings from Ashish Nehra to fine leg. Jasprit Bumrah moves gingerly and lets it through his fingers and into the fence. Not the start you would want. Four overs later, Tamim top edges a slog sweep off Ashwin. Bumrah, with all the time in the world to gobble it up, spills a dolly. He doesn't react, he just stares, looking totally blank. Then he comes on to bowl the next over and his confidence takes another beating as the man he had dropped hammers him for four fours in the over. "It's just not going to be my day," Bumrah would surely have thought, you feel. But in reality, it is not the case. Bumrah only looks at the good times, filtering out the bad ones. What has happened has happened, it's a thing of the past – that's what he believes in. Dhoni brings him back in the 17th over with 34 runs needed off 24 balls, Bumrah's figures reading 2-0-19-0. He gives away just seven runs. The choke is applied, and pressure is built. He comes back for his last over with 17 runs needed off 12 balls and concedes just six. Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 'Usain Bolt' sprint to run out Mustafizur Rahman, off the last ball, wins the match for India. Bumrah doesn't concede a single boundary in his last two overs and that, in all probability, is the turning point, which, however, flies under the radar.

Suresh Raina loves T20 cricket, more specifically, the IPL. He is one of the two players who have over 4000 runs in the IPL. THE LAST time Suresh Raina played in a T20 fixture at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium, he was adjudged Man-of-the-Match. Leading his IPL franchise, the Gujarat Lions against the Mumbai Indians, Raina scored a brisk half-century to help his side pull off a stunning chase. Drafted in India’s squad for the T20 series against England, the 30-year-old will seek confidence from his heady feats at this venue on that balmy evening in the month of May last year.

Leander Paes' 27-year-old career may come to an end after India's Davis Cup tie against New Zealand. If the All India Tennis Association (AITA) is to be believed, the upcoming Davis Cup tie against New Zealand may be Leander Paes’ last. The 43-year-old is on the brink of creating a world record of most number of Davis Cup doubles wins, and will play the Asia/Oceania tie before he possibly makes way for his juniors. “It most probably will be his last,” confirmed Bharat Oza, senior vice-president of the AITA on Monday. “He (Paes) needs another tie to create the record, so let’s give him a chance. He’s still playing actively and he’s still good.” Paes, who has the most number of ties played by an Indian (54), currently shares the record for most doubles wins – 42 – in the Davis Cup with Italian legend Nicola Pietrangeli.

It's not an easy group, but it's certainly not a tough one either. Kyrgyzstan, ranked just five places above India, are the strongest team in the group Kyrgyzstan, India, Myanmar and Macau. If Stephen Constantine’s side cannot manage to finish in the top-two of this group, and qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup, then they probably never will. When Constantine signed up as India’s coach two years ago, qualifying for the continental championship was set as his main target. It was a realistic ambition. The 2018 World Cup was never in consideration. But the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) decision to increase the number of teams from 16 to 24 gave India a real chance to qualify for the championship.

Though it will be Green Park’s first T20I, the venue hosted two IPL matches last season, both of which featured UP’s very own Suresh Raina. It’s Monday evening in febrile Kanpur, and the streets are clogged with knots of traffic. Overlooking the honking cars and the clatter of cycle-rickshaws, all jostling for space, is a huge hoarding of Akhilesh Yadav — the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He smiles beatifically, almost exuding a sense of innate calm. It’s a poignant frame, one that provides a timely reminder of the impending state elections. Like Kanpur’s chaotic traffic, Akhilesh and Samajwadi Party too have been involved in a frenetic political potboiler, one that has been simmering for a while now.

It forced the national selectors to take note of his talent. On Sunday again, it was his self-belief that helped India chase down 350 runs after being 63/4.

It was a memorable match for Team India as the Virat era began with this memorable win. Virat Kohli, the batsman wasn’t a bit different when he came out to bat at his usual position no.3. However, what has become a talking point within the cricketing fraternity as MS Dhoni seems to have demoted his previous skipper to below Yuvraj Singh.

Virat Kohli has started 2017 exactly how he ended the previous year. The 28-year-old Played an imperious knock in the 1st ODI to help India chase down England's 350-run target. Kohli was dismissed for 122, but his sheer presence and shot-making ability deflated the England bowling attack well before the end. The stylish right-hander showcased all facets of his game - fitness, precision and supreme batsmanship. But as much as his orthodox shots drew applause, it was the sheer audacity of a six he hit that made this knock even more memorable, a shot that will share Indian cricket's landmark footage, along with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 2011 World Cup final winning shot. Be it ODI or T20 cricket, the Indian captain showcases textbook batting technique at all times. On Sunday though, Kohli surprised the cricketing world with a rather unique shot. In the 34th over, the Delhi batsman executed a breathtaking piece of skill to hit Chris Woakes for a six. The right-arm pacer's short of length ball was dispatched over the cow corner with a short-arm jab. "Unbelievable," said Nasser Hussain in the commentary box. "I haven't seen anything like this before," exclaimed fellow commentator Sanjay Manjrekar.

Top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis breezed into the women’s third round with a 6-3 6-1 win over the Japanese pairing of Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato at the Wimbledon championships in London on Sunday. The Indo-Swiss were clinical in their approach and wrapped up the second round clash in 52 minutes on Court No. 3. The fancied duo served well besides converting five of the eight break points they earned in the match. Sania and Martina’s third round opponents will be Christina McHale and Jelena Ostapenko. The American-Latvian combine defeated 13th seeds Alla Kudryavtseva and Vania King 6-1 6-4 in their second round match. Earlier today, the 10th seeded Finnish-Australian pair of John Peers and Henri Kontinen needed only 62 minutes to dispatch India’s Leander Paes and his Polish partner Marcin Matkowski 6-3 6-2 in the second round. Paes and Matkowski had three break chances in the opening set but converted none. They lost their serve thrice in the match. Now Peers and Kontinen will take on sixth seeds Rohan Bopanna and Romania’s Florin Mergea. Paes is, though, defending his mixed doubles title with Hingis. They have been seeded 16th and got a first round bye. Sania and Bopanna have also got first round byes with their respective partners. Sania has paired with Ivan Dodig while Bopanna is playing with Anastasia Rodionova.

France will have the perfect opportunity to avenge their defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup when they take on the world champions in the Euro 2016 semi-finals on Thursday, according to star striker Olivier Giroud. “It will be a great match, we have a lot of desire to get our own back for the World Cup,” Giroud said after his two goals helped France thrash Iceland 5-2 in Sunday’s quarter-final. A header from Mats Hummels knocked France out in the quarter-final in Rio de Janeiro two years ago and Germany went on to win their fourth global crown. But an even more painful elimination at German hands lingers in the French sporting memory -- the 1982 World Cup, which featured the infamous flooring of Patrick Battiston by Harald “Toni” Schumacher. Arsenal forward Giroud said the showdown with Germany in Marseille will be “a completely different match” to the romp against the Icelanders. “They are the world champions and they are often in the last four of major tournaments,” Giroud said. “I’m very proud of what this France side is achieving and I hope we’ll come out once again with the right result.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) got down to shortlist the names for the national team’s coach on Tuesday, a post which has been lying vacant since Ravi Shastri’s term as team director came to an end after India’s semifinal exit from the World T20 in March this year. Although Sanjay Bangar has been appointed interim coach for the ongoing tour of Zimbabwe, the BCCI will look to finalise the candidate by June 24, well ahead of India’s tour of West Indies next month. BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), formed to shortlist the candidates, comprises Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and convenor Sanjay Jagdale.

Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza will lead Spain’s charge for Olympic tennis glory at Rio in August and could play together in the mixed doubles, officials said on Thursday. Also in a strong Spanish team are David Ferrer, ranked 14 in the world, Albert Ramos and Roberto Bautista Agut, Spanish tennis authorities said. The women will be spearheaded by Muguruza, fresh from her French Open title. No firm decision has yet been taken on a potentially potent Nadal-Muguruza partnership, said Conchita Martinez, captain of Spain’s Fed Cup and Davis Cup teams. Nadal, who won gold at the Beijing Games in 2008, has seen his fortunes plummet after a series of injuries. The latest, a wrist problem, forced his early withdrawal from Roland Garros and he is also out of Wimbledon, which starts later this month. Spanish tennis chiefs are confident he will be fit for Rio and Muguruza has talked enthusiastically of the prospect of teaming up with the man who has won 14 Grand Slam titles.

Germany and Poland played out the first goalless draw of the 2016 European Championship in Paris on Thursday. Though it was frustrating to watch revered internationals failing to score, it was not all drab. Here are our five takeaways from the game.Yes. Most German fans would disagree on that, and they may have a point or two, for Poland had only 37% possession, had no shots on target against Germany’s 3, and their number of passes, 184, looked abysmally low in comparison to Germany’s 523.But then a little context won’t hurt. No team had scored more goals in the European Championship qualification than Poland. With Robert Lewandowski pairing with the young Arkadiusz Milik, goals had been coming thick and fast for Poland. Against, Germany, Poland showed they can also do an Atletico Madrid. This versatility would do any team good in a knockout tournament. On that two forwards When was the last time a not-so-bad team used two proper strikers up front? The two-striker formation has gone so out of rage that even when teams have two very good ones in their squad, rarely use them together up front. For instance at Paris Saint-Germain, Edinson Cavani had to endure the flanks while Zlatan Ibrahimovic ruled the opposition penalty box. It is no different internationally, even England, whose love for 4-4-2 runs deep, do not use Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane together as two proper strikers. On that note, to see Lewandowski and Milik together up front, and combining well, though they failed to score against Germany, was a welcome respite.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Barack Obama on Tuesday on the penultimate leg of his whirlwind five-nation tour, during which the Indian leader hopes to strengthen “strategic partnership in diverse areas”. Modi arrived at the Joint Base Andrews from Switzerland after securing the European nation’s support for India’s Nuclear Suppliers Group membership ahead of a key meeting of the 48-nation bloc. Here are some of the key takeaways from the Prime Minister’s fourth visit to the United States: 1. Financial assistance for clean energy 2. Cyber framework accord 3. India’s role in Paris climate change agreement recognised 4. Pakistan asked to punish Pathankot attack perpetrators 5. India, US ink deal to boost defence, counter-terror cooperation 6. Agreement to step up conservation efforts 7. Expedited clearance for entry into the US 8. Activists raise India’s poor record in human trafficking

An unlucky own goal by Moldova goalkeeper Stanislav Namasco gave Switzerland a helping hand as the Euro 2016 finalists scraped a 2-1 victory in a warm-up match on Friday. The hosts, who had lost their three previous friendlies, went ahead in the 12th minute when Blerim Dzemaili sent a looping header against the underside of the crossbar before the ball hit Namasco on the back and went into the net. Switzerland experimented with Steve von Bergen and Fabian Schaer at the centre of the defence as coach Vladimir Petkovic continued his search for a reliable back line but they still looked vulnerable. The Swiss, who face Albania, Romania and hosts France in Group A of this month’s European Championship, created a flurry of chances early in the second half and were repeatedly thwarted by Namasco. The home team were stunned when Radu Ginsari equalised for Moldova in the 69th minute with a viciously dipping shot from 25 metres that caught goalkeeper Roman Buerki off his guard.

Just a few days after the BCCI invited applications for the vacant post of India senior men’s team head coach through its website, chief selector Sandeep Patil has thrown his hat into the ring for the high-profile job. “I have just applied (for the post),” Patil told PTI on Saturday. He did not confirm or deny whether anyone from the BCCI had asked him to do so. There was speculation that the former dashing batsman and ex-coach of Kenya had been advised by higher-ups in the Board to apply for the job as the senior selection panel headed by him has already completed most of its top-level assignments till September when his term is scheduled to come to an end. The five-man panel, which was originally scheduled to pick only the squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe starting in a few days’ time, also picked the team for the July-August tour of the West Indies when they met here on May 23. Sanjay Bangar has been named the interim coach of the new-look side to Zimbabwe, to be led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Murali Vijay has been one of the surprise packages of the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Tasked with the added responsibility of captaincy midway into the tournament, the 32-year-old turned out to be the most low-profile captain of any side in the league. The circumstances were lot different. He wasn’t unveiled at a grand event like leaders of other franchises. His appointment was more forced than expected. Faced with a spate of losses under the leadership of David Miller, Kings XI were forced to replace him with Vijay. The India opener did not seem out of place. Despite the many foreign stars in the squad, he remained in control. Kings XI might not have gone on a winning streak but they did put up a fight, which was largely missing with Miller at the helm. On Saturday, they will face the Rising Pune Supergiants, the winners will walk away knowing that they did not finish at the bottom of the table, if that is any consolation.

India are likely to announce the national men’s hockey squad for the Rio Olympics on July 5, chief coach and country’s High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans said in Bengaluru on Friday. “The national selectors are likely to meet on July 5 to pick the final squad for the Olympics. We will start the national camp on July 11 which will be a two-week camp. After that we leave for Madrid to play two friendly matches with Spain and then head to Rio and play a friendly with Spain and New Zealand. I believe we have entered a very exciting period in the lead up to the Olympics, “ Oltmans said. Oltmans also feels the one week break starting on Friday before the Champions Trophy will help rejuvenate the players ahead of the Olympics, the countdown for which has already begun. The 29-member men’s hockey squad will be on a week’s break before they rejoin on May 29 and Oltmans said the idea behind the move was to ensure the players feel fresh and hungry ahead of next month’s FIH Champions Trophy in London. “Starting June 5, the team will be away for almost a month playing two different tournaments in two different countries. Everything we do in this period will be demanding not just physically but also mentally,” Oltmans said.

Sevilla stunned Liverpool with a 3-1 comeback win to clinch a record third straight Europa League title on Wednesday. Swept aside in the first half yet trailing only 1-0, the Spanish club equalized less than 18 seconds after the restart with Kevin Gameiro’s goal from close range and Coke struck twice in the 64th and 70th minutes. Liverpool led on Daniel Sturridge’s beautifully curled shot with the outside of his left foot in the 35th. Victory in the second-tier competition, for the fifth time in 11 seasons, lifts Sevilla into the Champions League group stage alongside Europe’s elite next season. “Sevilla and its fans love this competition. We want it so much,” coach Unai Emery said. “Now we want to take the step toward the Champions League.” Defeat leaves Liverpool with no European football next season and dealt coach Juergen Klopp a fifth straight loss in a cup final, including the 2013 Champions League final when he was with Borussia Dortmund.

Big-hitting Kieron Pollard was recalled to the West Indies squad announced on Wednesday for next month’s triangular one-day series against Australia and South Africa. The squad also includes five members of the team that won last month’s World Twenty20 in India, notably the heroes of the deciding match against England, Carlos Brathwaite and Marlon Samuels. Pollard, who missed the World Twenty20 citing a knee injury, is a veteran of 91 one-day internationals (ODIs), with a batting average of 25.20 and a strike-rate of more than 93. Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, who has played in 16 test matches, and off-spinner Ashley Nurse have also been named, and are set to make their ODI debuts for West Indies. Notably absent from the squad is veteran all-rounder Chris Gayle, who has played 269 ODIs with his last appearance in the format coming in March 2015. The series starts in Guyana (June 3-7), moves to St Kitts (June 11-15), before concluding in Barbados (June 19-26).

The ‘first cut’ of the concept paper for the 2017-18 Indian football season has three tiers of league running simultaneously for five months, a Cup competition and an annual international meet called Champions Cup with the first one scheduled for next August. The plan was shared by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and its commercial partners IMG Reliance with I-League and Indian Super League (ISL) clubs here on Tuesday. Bhaichung Bhutia, head of the AIFF technical committee, India captain Sunil Chhetri, India woman international Aditi Chauhan and former international O Bembem Devi, too were present. The format shared with the stakeholders has not decided on the number of teams for the top tier, to be known as the Indian Super League (ISL), or the eligibility criteria. AIFF president Praful Patel said I-League clubs with a legacy and fan following will be helped by the federation to meet them. The next two tiers, called League 1 and League 2, will have 10 teams each. Contractual obligations with ISL franchises --- they all have a 10-year deal --- precludes promotion and relegation for now, according to the proposal. League 2 winners though will be promoted to League 1 but since League 1 champions can’t qualify for the ISL, it will have to be seen whether promises of revenue sharing is enough to keep them from winding up first teams.

Leicester City’s incredible Premier League fairytale reached a joyous crescendo as thousands of fans turned the city blue while revelling in the club’s title parade on Monday. For two weeks since Claudio Ranieri’s side were crowned one of the most unlikely champions in English football history, the city of Leicester hasn’t stop celebrating and the party climaxed beneath sunny skies 24 hours after the Foxes finished their campaign with a draw at Chelsea. After starting the season as 5,000-1 outsiders for the title, Leicester defied the odds in stunning fashion and being hailed by a crowd of over 100,000 was a fitting finale for Ranieri’s squad and the club’s Thai chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who soaked up the celebrations with his family.

This is the first instance in the Indian Premier League that MS Dhoni will not feature in the playoffs. Since its inception, the 34-year-old has been one of the league’s leading stars. After a steady stint with the Chennai Super Kings, the shift to Rising Pune Supergiants hasn’t been smooth. The team is out of contention for the playoffs and is placed at the bottom of the standings. Adjusting to a new group of players, set up, venues and spate of injuries have definitely not been easy on the skipper. His bat too has failed to light up the stage. His 22-ball, eight-run knock against Kolkata Knight Riders underscored his grim season. In the lead-up to the World Twenty20, Dhoni was in similar form. The marquee event saw glimpses of his finishing capabilities, but he never really dominated or led the batting. The poor form has continued in the IPL. In the previous game against KKR, Dhoni’s struggles came to the fore. He walked in with Pune in trouble at 74 for four. KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir packed fielders around the batsman to pile on the pressure.

Serena Williams ended a nine-month title drought with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Madison Keys in an all-American Rome Masters final on Sunday. Williams’ previous title came in Cincinnati in August — a month before her attempt at a calendar-year Grand Slam ended with a semifinal loss to Roberta Vinci at the U.S. Open. It was Williams’ fourth title in Rome and it comes exactly a week before the French Open begins. It was the first time two American women have met in a final on clay since Serena beat older sister Venus in the 2002 French Open. The last all-American final in Rome was in 1970, when Billie Jean King beat Julie Heldman. In the men’s final of the tournament, top-ranked Novak Djokovic was facing Andy Murray.

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis produced a spirited fight back as they survived a late onslaught to win their first ever clay-court title in Rome at Italian Open on Sunday. After losing the second set by a wicker, the Indo-Romanian pair rebounded strongly to secure a 6-1, 6-7(5), 10-3 win over recently united Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the summit showdown that lasted for one hour an 30 minutes. With the win, Hingis and Mirza also captured their 14th women’s doubles title together and this was also the 5th title of the season for the pair after Sydney, Brisbane, Australian Open and St Petersburg. . It was their first title win since the end of their incredible 41-match winning streak in Doha in February.

Leicester City’s Premier League winners were given a guard of honour by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and then they ended their glory season with a late equaliser from Danny Drinkwater in a 1-1 draw with the outgoing champions on Sunday. The home team, their fans and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich applauded Leicester on to the field and there was a particularly fond reception for their former manager Claudio Ranieri, who was given a special presentation before the game. Chelsea had looked the superior side and Cesc Fabregas seemed set to spoil Leicester’s final party when he scored from the penalty spot in the 66th minute. Yet with nine minutes left, England midfielder Drinkwater hammered a 30-year shot that left Leicester’s fans able to celebrate winning the league by 10 points, as they chanted: “That’s why we’re champions.”

Gujarat Lions skipper Suresh Raina won the toss and opted to field first in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Sunday. Gujarat Lions skipper Suresh Raina won the toss and opted to field first in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Sunday. Raina’s Kolkata counterpart Gautam Gambhir said he wouldn’t mind batting first either, as his side had defended 164 in the last game, adding that the Eden wicket looked like a good one and would have something for everyone.

Barcelona closed in on the La Liga title by thrashing local rivals Espanyol 5-0 on Sunday as Atletico Madrid dropped out of the race after losing 2-1 at Levante and Real Madrid stayed in contention by beating Valencia 3-2. Barca top the standings on 88 points, Real moved into second on 87 and Atletico have 85 with one game remaining. Barca went ahead in the eighth minute when Lionel Messi curled a 22-yard free kick into the top corner with a magnificent finish. Luis Suarez stretched the hosts’ lead with two goals in the second half before Rafinha and Neymar completed the rout. Atletico took the lead at Levante in the first minute through Fernando Torres, but the relegated home side fought back, equalising through Victor Casadesus before Giuseppe Rossi grabbed the winner in stoppage time. Real were without goalkeeper Keylor Navas, defender Dani Carvajal, midfielder Luka Modric and winger Gareth Bale through injury, but went ahead thanks to a thunderous low finish from Cristiano Ronaldo in the 26th minute.

Negotiations for India to buy 36 French Rafale fighter jets are almost at the close, the defence ministry said, with sources saying the price will be set at around $9 billion (approx Rs 65,000 crore). Both sides had hoped to wrap up the strategic order during President Francois Hollande’s visit for India’s Republic Day celebration in January, but hard bargaining on price stalled a final result. In April last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced in Paris that India would buy the French fighter jets under a government-to-government deal, scrapping the original plan to buy 126 Rafales after commercial negotiations with plane-maker Dassault Aviation collapsed.

Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea defeated Robert Lindstedt and Alexander Peya 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles event at the Monte-Carlo Rolex tennis Masters. The sixth seeds broke serve four times (4/16) and fired four aces in the 87-minute win here on Wednesday. They will next face fourth seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares. John Peers and Henri Kontinen cruised 6-3, 6-2 against Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram, securing a spot in the second round in 51 minutes. The unseeded duo saved both break points faced and are looking for a second team title after winning their debut event in Brisbane in January. “Today’s match was very good,” Peers was quoted as saying by atpworldtour.com after the match.

Had India not lost to the West Indies in the semifinals, Ravindra Jadeja would have been in the blue jersey playing at the Eden Gardens on April 3 in front of 66,000 fans --- and more than a billion watching around the world. But a couple of days after India’s exit --- the day the World T20 final was being played --- the versatile cricketer was at Jamanagar’s Ajisinh Pavilion ground turning out for local team, Jamnagar District, in the Bahadurbhai Kothari Cup final. Be it a major playing venue or a relatively unknown centre, Jadeja is at ease everywhere. No wonder then that he commands tremendous following in his home state. “A day after playing in the World T20 semifinal in Mumbai, he reached Rajkot and was at the ground in the morning for the final. He scored 137, took three wickets and effected two run-outs to bag the Man-of-the-Match award against Celebration Eleven. A crowd of 10,000 thronged the stadium to cheer him. The game ended at 4.30 pm and the presentation ceremony lasted another hour but Jadeja remained with the players till 8 pm, and so did the crowd,” says his childhood coach, Mahendrasinh.

The loss to New Zealand complicating matters for them, an inconsistent India will take on Malaysia in a do-or-die battle to secure a final berth in their final league fixture of the 25th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Ipoh on Friday. India, who have been unimpressive so far except for the 5-1 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan, need to pull off a victory against Malaysia to ensure their place in the final match of the tournament, which they have won five times and were bronze medallists last year. World champions Australia have already qualified for the final to be played on Saturday with 15 points from five successive wins. India have had an edge in past encounters against Malaysia, who will, however, draw inspiration from their 3-2 win over the Asian Games champions during last year’s Sultan Azlan Shah Cup at the same venue. In the last meeting between these two teams, India shattered Malaysia’s hopes of qualifying for the Olympic Games by winning 3-2 in last year’s World League Semifinals at Antwerp (Belgium).Avenging that loss will be on Malaysia’s mind, although they have faint hopes of qualifying for the final after being held to a draw by Canada two days ago.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday questioned the language of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in berating the West Bengal government for the Kolkata flyover tragedy. “Journos who questioned my language in December and Kapil’s language this week silent on PM’s language yesterday,” Kejriwal tweeted, referring to his past comments about Modi and those of Kapil Mishra, Delhi’s water minister, this week. In an election rally in West Bengal on Thursday, Modi accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of indulging in politics over the dead and said the Kolkata flyover tragedy was “god’s message” to people to save the state from Trinamool Congress (TMC). The prime minister also expanded ‘TMC’ as ‘Terror, Maut (death) and Corruption’. “Journos, is this good language for a PM?” said Kejriwal in another tweet. Kejriwal had been condemned for describing Modi as a “coward and a psychopath” in December in connection with a CBI raid on Delhi government offices. Mishra, his cabinet colleague, has also been censured in the media for suggesting on April 5 that Modi might have been an “agent” of the Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

At the unveiling of his new team jersey in February, MS Dhoni told reporters he would be lying if he said he’d moved on. “I cannot suddenly say I am very excited to play for a new team,” he had said and fondly remembered his time with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).Less than two months and a World T20 later, he’s knuckled down to work in Pune. A day after India lost in the semifinal to the West Indies in the World T20, Dhoni was in Pune, said Rising Pune Supergiants’ coach Stephen Fleming. “I have certainly moved on because the challenge in front of us is immense. The time that I have spent this week with MS has been all about that. His commitment to moving forward has been really strong. I think the one thing you can take from all your experience is the positives and we’ll both try and do that (from their time at CSK).”

In a move that capitalises on the current demographic advantages, the Finance Ministry has proposed a cash purse of Rs 1,700 crore to for its plan to impart skill training to one crore youth over the next three years. Presenting the Union budget on Monday, finance minister Arun Jaitley said 1,500 multi-skill training centres will be set up under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Yojana of the Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry. A proposal to link the national career service to state employment exchanges to improve employment avenues is also in the works. The National Skill Development Mission has already trained 76 lakh youth, the Minister said, while presenting the general budget in the Parliament.
